Kids Wall Climbing

As I mentioned in my rock climbing article that I did a session of artificial rock wall climbing for my preparation, what I haven’t mentioned yet, I did it with some kids. These kids are between 5-10 years old (can you believe that?). They’re very good in doing the climbing and I can see how carefree and confident they’re in taking one step to another. I guess I should give credit to their teacher who also my climbing partner.

I talked to their teacher and surprisingly to know that climbing is something that kids naturally enjoy because it involves physical and mental activities. Not to mention it gives them an opportunity to learn and develop their skills of communication, trust and confidence and of course with highly supervision.

Then I read an article about climbing and found out there are many benefits in doing this activity for kids (Climbing with Kids), like:

  • Focus and concentration
  • Hand-eye coordination
  • Problem-solving skills
  • Self esteem
  • Overcoming fears
  • Trust and team-building
  • Body confidence
  • Building physical strength
  • Setting and achieving goals
  • Enjoying and respecting nature

Apparently this activity is also good for people with dyspraxia (a development coordination disorder). The Dyspraxia Foundation says people with dyspraxia often have difficulty planning their movements, which makes it hard when they have to accommodate a changing environment as well as organizing themselves. Therefore with climbing or designated climbing wall to be precise, they only have to think about how to move themselves because designated climbing wall is considered as stable environment.

It is interesting to know these benefits for kids, adults and people with special needs. I think most sports (not the extreme one) are good especially under supervision from experts. Have fun trying!
