How to Deal with Jet Lag and Life After Vacation

Long holiday is over, now it’s the time to get back to our regular activities. The tough office situation, piles and piles of work, deafening sound of scolding, or the hustle and bustle of big city traffic are back into our lives.

The first day of work can be the most tiring day for several people. It seems as if they suffered from “jetlag”. The word is used to describe a situation where one is too lazy, sleepy or just plain tired on the first day of work.

This happen due to changes of activities when one is on holiday. Holiday is spent by being lazy (or otherwise having as much good times as possible until we drop). This condition is of course very different from our work situation where our times is govern by many sets of rules. This differences create the accumulation of stress in our brain, thus trigger laziness and hard-to-contain sleepiness.

From 2004 to 2008, The Hartford, an insurance company in Connecticut conducted a survey and analysis to over 1 million cases of brain decline or ‘short-term disability’ resulted from taking a long holiday. This is due to the lack of challenge received by the brain during the long holiday period.

People are usually too lazy to get back to work after holiday, especially if they are not in a good shape. That is why even during holiday, you should do activities to sharpen your mind and take care of your body condition in order to stay healthy,” said the deputy director of The Hartford, Glenn Shapiro.

The first day of work can feel very exhausting maybe because our condition and our mood that should already be in “Work Mode” are still in “Rest Mode”. In other words, the holiday is not fully over yet. No wonder that in some offices, especially government offices, many employees are absent on the first day of work.

So what is the solution?

First of all, Laziness and feeling tired are not acceptable reasons.

Using the last day of holiday to rest, refresh our body, is one of the solution you can try. Avoid doing any activities on the last day of the holiday. Give a one day gap to return our mood to work mode.

Second of all, Think about Happy Thoughts

Work sounds scary if we only think about the negative impacts. I am sure, no matter where we work, there are many happy things that keep us stay. Think about those happy thoughts. Those are the things that will reinvigorate your work spirit.

Lastly, Don’t complain.

Complaining will only increase our stress level and make our days even worst. Despite anything else, the first day of work is the beginning of our work lives. We shouldn’t think about the next holiday on our first day back at work.

Let’s do the work! Keep the spirit up!
